The Clubhouse Network Represents Museum of Science at National Mentoring Summit

January 18, 2016

On January 28, Gail Breslow and Aviva Baff from the Museum of Science's Clubhouse Network will present "Full STE(A)M Ahead: Youth Panel Reflections on the Importance of Mentoring" at the National Mentoring Summit in Washington, DC. Clubhouse alumni will share powerful stories about The Clubhouse's unique learning approach and mentoring model.

Each year, more than 25,000 young people from underserved communities are served by The Clubhouse Network, a global network of community-based centers founded 22 years ago by the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab. Clubhouses provide young people with a place to explore their own ideas using technology, supported by mentors who serve as role models and contribute to a learning community where youth follow their passions while developing skills and self-confidence.

The results speak for themselves: Youth typically stay involved with their Clubhouse for nearly five years. 97% of Clubhouse alumni say that The Clubhouse was the most important source of support for setting high goals and expectations for themselves. At a time when STEM jobs often go unfilled, 77% of Clubhouse youth express interest in studying a STEM-related field.

A $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention is enhancing The Clubhouse's mentoring program through Project IMPACTS (Increasing Mentor Participation and Commitment to Success). With support from The Clubhouse Network, Clubhouses in Arizona, California, Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota are piloting a program to strengthen mentor effectiveness, developing improved practices for recruiting, training, and retention. The eventual goal is to introduce the program across the Network.

During January -- National Mentoring Month -- The Clubhouse is also participating in a Massachusetts corporate mentoring summit and State House Youth Mentoring Day. The national summit, convened by MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, brings together nearly 1,000 people and includes Capitol Hill Day with members of Congress.
