NCTL Calls on Stakeholders to Advance Engineering Education

In late January, the Museum of Science's National Center for Technological Literacy® (NCTL®) called on key stakeholders from nearly 30 organizations and institutions across the country to work together to advance PK-12 engineering education nationwide. Among those attending the informal "summit" in Boston were the American Society for Engineering Education, the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, the National Academy of Engineering, the National Society of Black Engineers, Project Lead the Way, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and the Society of Women Engineers.

The organizations agreed to form a community of practice to share strengths and opportunities in order to increase engineering literacy for all. Among the issues discussed: teacher preparation, research-based materials, messaging, and policy.

The NCTL convened the meeting in response to a call from respected and engaged funders who are seeking a larger collaboration around PK-12 formal and informal or out-of-school time (OST) engineering design experiences for teachers, students, and parents.

Most attendees also enjoyed some of the Museum of Science's latest exhibits and programs including its new planetarium show, From Dream to Discovery: Inside NASA, an OST Engineering Design Challenge, an Engineering is Elementary® classroom activity, and a networking dinner at the home of Museum president and director Ioannis Miaoulis.
