NCTL Adds New Engineering is Elementary PD Providers

July 17, 2014

To meet the needs of teachers eager to implement the Engineering is Elementary® (EiE®) curriculum nationwide, the Museum of Science, Boston developed an Extended Network of EiE Professional Development Providers through its National Center for Technological Literacy®. The network grew significantly this spring with the addition of California-based agency WestEd, Florida's Orlando Science Center, and the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM).

"The title of EiE PD provider is new for SMM, but our relationship is longstanding," says EiE PD director Kristin Sargianis. SMM was one of EiE's first field test sites, and also collaborated on Cargill-funded research to evaluate the impact of EiE in two Minnesota districts. One outgrowth of that program was an innovative professional development strategy, "immersion residencies." In contrast to a traditional workshop held outside of school hours, an immersion residency brings an SMM educator to a classroom to demonstrate EiE teaching strategies. "Teachers ask, 'What does EiE look like in the classroom?'" says SMM program developer Maija Sedzielarz. "Immersion residencies help answer such questions."

In addition to offering EiE workshops, the Orlando Science Center (OSC) has launched a school-wide EiE implementation at Castle Creek Elementary with support from Lockheed Martin. "We love how EiE ties to real-world situations," says Heather Norton, OSC's senior education director. "When we learned about the network it was natural to say, we'd be happy to share EiE with Florida teachers."

WestEd offers customized PD to California schools through its K-12 Alliance program; regional director Jody Sherriff says adding EiE to their roster was well-timed. "California just adopted the Next Generation Science Standards and EiE has great connections to them." WestEd has already included EiE in four Math-Science Partnerships providing PD to teachers in disadvantaged districts.

"Our new collaborators deliver exceptional professional development," says Shannon McManus, who leads EiE's effort to develop PD collaborations. "We're pleased to be working with their talented staff."
