Museum Hosts Informal Engineering Education Workshop September 25-26 -- Apply until August 1

July 20, 2014

The Museum of Science, Boston welcomes museum educators across the country to an Engineering Design Education Workshop at the Museum to share successful approaches to developing and facilitating design-based engineering activities.

DATE: Thursday, September 25: 9:00am - 5:00pm and Friday, September 26: 9:00am - 12:00pm

What works? How do we speak inclusively and foster design thinking without leading? How can research inform program development and delivery?

The group will share learning from their own institutions -- including effective approaches to engineering challenges, research findings, and lessons learned. The Museum of Science will offer an in-depth look at its Design Challenges program and workshop participants will engage in and facilitate Design Challenges activities themselves. The Museum's research and evaluation team will also share preliminary results from their research on the effects of facilitation of design-based activities on visitors' attitudes toward engineering and engineering self-efficacy.

Since 2003, more than 500,000 Museum visitors -- 53% female -- have designed, built, tested, and improved model bobsleds, boats, trampolines, and 16 other Design Challenges, while learning to think like engineers (see photo). Often more than 150 visitors per hour spend up to 30 minutes in the Museum's Engineering Design Workshop, working on their challenges. Encouraging girls in engineering design is key. All participants are rewarded with a Design Challenges magnet.

The Museum of Science will offer a travel stipend of up to $300 per person, lodging for September 24 and 25 nights, and conference meals. Applications accepted until August 1. Accepted applicants will be notified by August 11. This workshop is made possible by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Museum is also making Design Challenges Partnership opportunities available to leading institutions worldwide interested in expanding their hands-on informal engineering programming with research-based, high-volume challenges.
